Phonics and Reading
Key Stage 1 pupils use Jolly Phonics in EYFS and then progress through the phonic stages, learning all the phonemes and digraphs they need to help them to read, segment and blend. We also learn to read and write the Tricky Words.
We begin reading using Oxford Reading Tree and a wide range of other banded books to expose the children a diverse selection to choose from. In Willow class we aim to inspire and encourage a love of reading and discussion from the very start.
Once the children are in year 1 and 2 we introduce the children to other reading skills, teaching them retrieval, interpretation and choosing skills ~ R. I. C., comprehensions and book reviewing.
